The building carries its history openly. The lobby's beams, painted ceilings and decorative details reward a slow look, and the hotel leans into its lore — the ghost stories are part of the welcome rather than hidden away. Rooms are compact in the way of 1920s hotels but have been renovated with modern comforts; upper floors bring views over the city.
Stay craft: book a higher floor for the views and quieter nights, end at least one day of caving with a drink at Vertex Sky Bar as the light fades over the hills, and walk the presidents statues downtown with kids. Parking is the main downtown trade-off — ask about options when booking. Summer, and especially the August motorcycle rally season, books up early and pushes rates up, so plan ahead.
Practicals and fit: 523 Sixth Street, downtown Rapid City, about twenty minutes from the regional airport. Use it as the base for Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Badlands National Park to the east. Fit: Black Hills road-trippers, couples and history-minded families.

How far is it from Wind Cave and Jewel Cave?
Wind Cave is about an hour south and Jewel Cave a little over an hour southwest, with Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park on the way — ideal for a Black Hills loop.
Is the hotel really haunted?
It has a long-standing reputation as one of the West's haunted hotels, and the staff share the stories happily. Most guests simply enjoy the history and the sky bar.
When should we book?
Early for summer, and especially for the August motorcycle rally period, when the Black Hills fill up and rates climb. Shoulder seasons are calmer and better value.

The Eighth Wonder of the World, restored — a 1902 grand hotel built around a vast domed atrium in the southern Indiana hills, under an hour from Marengo Cave and the best reason to make cave country a grand-hotel weekend.

The Trinity Hotel
★★★★★
Carlsbad's boutique in a bank — the 1892 First National building reborn as a nine-room inn with soaring windows, a serious dinner room pouring its own Texas-NM wines, and the caverns twenty-five minutes south. The desert town's one special stay.

The Mimslyn Inn
★★★★★
Luray's hilltop grande dame — the 1931 colonnaded inn above Main Street, porches aimed at the Blue Ridge, fireplaces and a speakeasy below, with the caverns five minutes away and Shenandoah's Skyline Drive ten. Valley hospitality, kept.
